What is Family Therapy?

What Is Family Therapy?

Family therapy is a form of counselling that focuses on the relationships and interactions between family members. Rather than viewing difficulties as belonging to one individual, family therapy explores how patterns of communication, behaviour, and relationships within the family system may be contributing to ongoing challenges.

A family therapist works collaboratively with family members to identify concerns, understand different perspectives, and develop more effective ways of relating to one another. Sessions may involve the whole family, parents and children, siblings, couples with children, or other significant family members, depending on the needs of those involved.

When Can Family Therapy Help?

Family therapy can be beneficial for a wide range of situations, including:

  • Frequent arguments or ongoing conflict

  • Communication difficulties

  • Parenting challenges

  • Separation, divorce, or blended family adjustments

  • Changes in family circumstances, such as relocation or bereavement

  • Supporting a family member experiencing anxiety, depression, or other mental health concerns

  • Behavioural difficulties in children or adolescents

  • Relationship breakdowns between parents and children

  • Stress related to caring responsibilities

  • Significant life transitions or family crises

Families do not need to be in crisis to benefit from therapy. Many families seek support simply because they want to strengthen their relationships and develop healthier ways of communicating.

The Benefits of Family Therapy

Improved Communication

One of the most common reasons families seek therapy is difficulty communicating effectively. Family therapy helps individuals express their thoughts and feelings in a safe and constructive way while learning to listen with greater empathy and understanding.

As communication improves, family members often feel more heard, valued, and respected.

Greater Understanding and Empathy

Family members can sometimes become stuck in patterns of blame, frustration, or misunderstanding. Therapy creates opportunities to explore each person's experiences and perspectives, helping family members gain a deeper understanding of one another.

This increased empathy can reduce conflict and foster stronger emotional connections.

Healthier Conflict Resolution

Disagreements are a normal part of family life. Family therapy does not aim to eliminate conflict altogether but rather helps families develop healthier ways of managing it.

Learning constructive conflict-resolution skills can reduce tension and create a more supportive home environment.

Stronger Relationships

When communication improves and understanding grows, relationships often become stronger and more secure. Family therapy can help rebuild trust, repair emotional distance, and strengthen bonds between parents, children, siblings, and extended family members.

Support During Difficult Times

Families often face challenges that can feel overwhelming when managed alone. Whether coping with loss, illness, separation, or significant life changes, family therapy provides a space for families to support one another while developing resilience and coping strategies together.

Improved Emotional Wellbeing

Relationships have a significant impact on our mental and emotional wellbeing. When family relationships become healthier, individuals often experience reduced stress, increased confidence, and a greater sense of emotional security.

What Happens During Family Therapy?

Every family is unique, and therapy is tailored to the specific needs of those attending. In sessions, family members are encouraged to share their experiences openly and respectfully. The therapist helps facilitate conversations, identify patterns that may be contributing to difficulties, and support the family in finding practical solutions.

The focus is not on assigning blame but on understanding and creating positive change.

What We Offer?

Seeking support as a family can feel daunting, but it is often a positive step towards building stronger, healthier relationships. We currently have two family therapists who can work with you online or in-person in our Skipton Clinic. In-person sessions take place on Monday afternoons and evenings, with increased flexibility for online sessions during the week at a time that suits you.
